WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) was defined by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 and stores sound uncompressed, as raw PCM samples. Nothing is discarded, so the file holds exactly what the microphone, recorder or mixing session produced.
That is why it is the working format for recording, mixing, and sampling. It is also why the files are so big. CD-quality stereo runs at 1,411 kbit/s, about 10 MB per minute. A WAV carries almost no metadata either, so players usually show it as an untitled track with no cover art.
Size, nearly always. A three-minute WAV weighs about 30 MB; the same recording as an MP3 is roughly 3 to 4 MB. That is the difference between an attachment a mail server rejects and one it accepts. It is also the difference between a voice memo you can share instantly and one that stalls on mobile data.
It also makes the audio portable. MP3 plays on every phone, car stereo, games console, podcast host, and upload form there is. Its ID3 tags also carry the title, artist, and cover art that a WAV cannot hold.
MP3 is lossy: the encoder throws away the detail your ears are least likely to notice. Converting from WAV means that happens exactly once, from a lossless master. You are not stacking artefacts on top of an already-compressed file, the way a lossy-to-lossy conversion does.
At 192 kbit/s most listeners cannot tell the MP3 from the WAV on ordinary playback gear, and 320 kbit/s narrows the gap further. For speech, 128 kbit/s or a mono channel setting halves the file again with nothing useful lost. If the recording is quiet or uneven, switch on normalisation while you convert.
