What is audio normalization?

Peak, RMS or EBU R128, which should you use?

Peak normalization finds the single loudest sample in the file and shifts the whole recording so that peak lands on your target level. It is quick and it never changes the dynamics, but two files with the same peak can still feel very different in loudness.

RMS normalization works from the average energy of the recording instead, which is much closer to how loud a track actually sounds. It is the usual choice for music libraries, DJ sets and anything that has to play back evenly one track after another.

EBU R128 measures integrated loudness in LUFS the way broadcasters do, and watches the loudness range and the true peak at the same time. Pick it for podcasts, radio, television and streaming delivery, where a specific loudness standard has to be met.

What loudness should you target?

The target level decides how loud the finished file ends up. The default here is -23 LUFS, the EBU R128 figure used across European radio and television. Podcasts are normally delivered around -16 LUFS, and streaming services level playback to roughly -14 LUFS. Pushing a master louder than that buys nothing.

In EBU mode you can also set the loudness range target. It controls how far the quiet and loud passages are allowed to drift apart, and defaults to 7 LUFS. You can set the maximum true peak in dBTP as well, which defaults to -2.0. Keeping true peak below zero leaves headroom for lossy encoding, where the decoded waveform can overshoot the original samples and clip.

Audio normalization FAQ

Is normalizing audio free?

Yes. You can normalize audio online for free, with no account and nothing to install. A subscription is only worth it if you regularly work with very large files or long recordings.

Does normalizing audio reduce quality?

Normalization changes the level of the recording, not its content, so the adjustment itself costs nothing. Quality only comes into it through the output format. Re-encoding to MP3 or another lossy format loses a little detail. Choose WAV or FLAC if the result has to stay lossless.

What is the difference between normalizing and amplifying audio?

Amplifying applies a fixed gain that you choose. Guess low and a quiet file stays too quiet. Guess high and a loud one clips. Normalizing measures the file first, then applies exactly the gain needed to reach your target level. That is why it gives consistent results across a whole set of files.

What LUFS should I normalize to?

-23 LUFS is the EBU R128 broadcast target and the default setting. Podcasts are usually delivered at about -16 LUFS and music streaming platforms play back at roughly -14 LUFS. With no specific requirement, -16 LUFS with a true peak of -1 dBTP is a safe all-round choice.

Which audio formats can I normalize?

AAC, AIFF, FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, Opus, WAV and WMA are all supported. You can keep the original format or pick a different one in the same run, so a normalized WAV can come back as an MP3.

Can I normalize several audio files at once?
