What an audio extractor does
Use this tool when you only need the sound from a video file. Upload a video such as MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV or WEBM and save the audio track as MP3, WAV, M4A or another supported format. Keep music, voice, podcast episodes or voice overs without the video and prepare them for players, editors or sharing.
A video file is a container. Inside it are a picture track and one or more soundtracks, usually encoded as AAC, MP3, AC3, or Opus. Extracting means reading that soundtrack from the container and writing it into an audio file on its own.
The video you upload is not modified. You get a separate audio file back and can keep using the original clip as before.
Video to audio: the formats you can use
On the input side, the common containers all work: MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WEBM, WMV, FLV, and 3GP. Extracting audio from an MP4 is the most common case, because phone recordings, screen captures, and most downloads are saved as MP4.
On the output side, MP3 plays on nearly every device and app, so it is the safe default. WAV stores the audio without compression, which is what you want if the track goes into an editor next. M4A keeps AAC quality at a smaller size, and OGG, FLAC, AAC, and AIFF are available as well.
If the video has more than one soundtrack, for example a second language, the extraction uses the first one.
Quality, bitrate, and file size
Extracting to MP3 or M4A re-encodes the sound, so the bitrate you choose sets the result. 192 kbps or higher keeps music close to the source for most listeners. For speech, an interview, or a lecture, 96 to 128 kbps in mono is enough and keeps the file small.
Pick WAV when quality matters more than size. It writes the audio uncompressed, so nothing is thrown away a second time. The cost is size: a few minutes of stereo audio already runs to tens of megabytes.
The optional settings also let you change the sample rate, switch between mono and stereo, and adjust the volume. You can set a start and end time so only the part of the video you care about is extracted.
